Leiann Vergara Test Form: 11632 1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from you life where you reacted as “Spock,” “Kirk,” and “Scotty.” Feel free to tell it in story form. There have been several instances in my life where I have reacted logically, emotionally and made decisions based on my survival. The Star Trek metaphors have related to the use of the human brain. Spock is like the cerebellum which functions to make rational decisions. Kirk is like the midbrain in which emotions play a part and lastly, Scotty made decisions based on survival.
To start off, going to college is a life changing event in a student’s life. As an 18 year old, I was so sure that I was going to college to study human biology and become a doctor. So I decided to attend UC Santa Cruz as a freshman. However, at the end of my first year, I became very unsure about the thought of being a doctor. So I decided that I would go to community college for the next year to actually try and figure out what I wanted to do in life. This would relate to Spock (logic) because I had to make a rational decision about my educational future. I decided to go to Mt. SAC because I wanted to take introduction classes to try and figure out what I really wanted to do in my career. By doing this I would also same thousands of dollars instead of taking classes that I don’t even want to take. Also another event in which I related to Kirk (emotions) was through my emotions during preliminary match. During my senior year of high school, my badminton team went to preliminary round to claim titles in the league. This was something that I was very excited about because my partner and I were one of the top 4 pairs in the league for girls’ doubles. This meant that we got to skip the first round of games and move to the second round. Here we played another set of girls but unfortunately lost to girls’ doubles that we had previously won against. This incident led to tears because my partner and I actually had hopes in winning a title. The tears were all caused by simple mistakes leading to frustration and over thinking. Lastly, I related to Scotty (survival) was when I went on a hike with some of my friends from Santa Cruz. This trail was about 7 miles long to a riverbed outside of the campus. There were also old railroad tracks so my friends and I thought that no trains would pass as we hiked. On our way, back we decided to blast our music and all sing along. We kept hearing train horns and kept looking for one but we wouldn’t see anything, so we just assumed that it was just the cars that were driving on a nearby highway. So as I sang along all I heard was my friend screaming at me to get off the tracks. I was the last one to hear. At an instant, all I could think of was to panic and jump off the cliff. The edge of the walkway was about 3 feet wide. As the train was approaching the only thought that was going through my mind was to jump off the cliff, which I realized would have been worse since the train was probably only traveling about 5 mph.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using your own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? Throughout my twenty years of living, I have experienced several events in which where unusual coincidences but not very important. One event that occurred recently was where my sister and I were talking about our friend, Jen, whom we haven’t seen in a long time. This conversation sparked when we saw a picture of her on social media just a few days before. We mentioned how we haven’t seen her in over 3 years and we missed seeing her around during our events. So a few days late my sister and I went to the Grove to go shopping and buy a cupcake from Sprinkles. As we were walking, I noticed someone who had the same hairstyle and I looked down and saw her dog as well. This was definitely unexpected because we were just talking about her a few days before. Another event in which I thought was an unusual coincidence was seeing a childhood friend of mine at UC Santa Cruz. My friend Lisa and I had parted ways when we were in seventh grade because I had moved to a different city. Since, cell phones and social media were not popular during that time we lost connection and just stopped talking. We only met each other again when I was having breakfast by myself at the café that she lived near by and I noticed that she looked like someone I knew. During the first encounter, I thought that maybe I was wrong so I didn’t say anything to her. However, I saw my friend again for the second time and called out her name. Here, she turned around and recognized me. From that point we reconnected and hung out a few times throughout the year. I thought that the event was a coincidence because since I moved I was hoping to just run into her anywhere. In my opinion, Russell would say that these events just happened by chance. I was at the right place at the right time, as well as my other friends.

Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as "Spock", "Kirk", and "Scotty." Feel free to tell it in story form
1.Drawing from the reactions of Scotty and Kirk I remember a moment in my life where an overwhelming sense of emotion, as well a survival reaction came from me. When I was younger I got into a car accident on my way to school, a car t-boned my school bus and I was knocked unconscious as, I regained consciousness, I saw that the people in the bus with me were in a panic, one girl crying with blood running down her face, a boy holding his arm wincing in pain and the driver frantically looking around as to see if we were okay, but unable to stay still. The moment after I was aware of my surrounding I realized I had to ensure that I was not injured as the others, frantically checking my head and face to feel any wounds I realized that I was not injured, expect for a minor cut on my hand. Then an overwhelming sense of emotion came over me and I began to cry because I could not speak after that moment. A time that I can recall that I reacted with logic, is essentially and every day reaction for any working college student, who is also in a relationship. I have to logically divide my time into, time for homework, work and spending time with my significant other.
Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally?
2. A time that I believed that I experience and unusual coincidence was when my significant other had given me a ring of his to hold. When he told me to hold the ring I did not know the significance of it, nonetheless I kept it with me and placed it on a necklace of mine since it did not fit my finger well. After dating for a period of a time, I learned that the ring that I kept he used as a representation for the love that he wanted to have, which was coincidental since I later became his girlfriend and have been dating him since. However this event would be explained by a rational person thru mere events, the ring essentially had no significance but what he later decided to place on it, as well the fact that he gave it to me was only a trust test he decided to do, to see if I would lose the ring or return it to him. As well, it can be explained that I placed the ring on a necklace only because I did not wish to wear it on my finger, therefore all the event are explainable and not in any coincidence.

Film Test 1 - Code:11632
1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describes three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock”, “Kirk”, and “Scotty”. I have been reacted like “Spock” multiple times throughout my whole life. For example, since High School my life wasn't easy because by that time I had gotten here without any knowledge of English. For me was like a new world where I saw myself different from others. It was one of the most difficult life events I had to overcome. As a result of that I told my mom I did not wanted to graduate no more from high School that is was just pointless, I wanted to go back to Colombia where I came from. For some reason, my logically' thinking kicked in and realized that it was a bad decision and to throw away my mother' efforts, instead to study harder, and try do bright up all my knowledge, always things are difficult but not impossible. Sometimes I have thought things with my emotional reasoning (Kirk), which is not always. I always use my emotional reasoning for some things that are important in my life: like my education, my mom and why not my boyfriend too. I have done things for them even though I knew it was not the right thing to do or something that I despised. One example is when I graduated from High School, with all my effort even thought I didn’t believe and then I choose to come here at Mtsac which is a good idea. I always keep tracking of my heart because is one part of my emotions, also paying attention of my mom opinions nevertheless, she is always right. Least but not last, my survival or the reptilian reasoning (Scotty) happens almost every single day and everywhere I go in my life. My survival should be for everybody, for example, every day is a survival, we live in a world where everything we do is because we have to do or competition each other, everywhere where we going be dangerous situations and we need to be prepared for those situation. This will drive us to become who we are and where we come from.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describes two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? One unusual coincidence that I experienced was 3 years ago when I met some weird guy at High School. For some reason we took some classes together, I never thought he was going be someone important in my life until now, is funny how at first I didn't like him. I remember how ignoring him all the senior years. By that time I was acting rude with all guys who were trying to get at me. I never thought this guy going do many things for me, just because he wanted an opportunity to know me more. After we finish senior year I didn't see him no more. Until one year and half later, for some reason he saw me walking to my math class, he stopped me and starter talking with me. I looked him and I was like "Do I know you" he answer me yeah. He showed me a photo of him, and I just realized he was that guy from High School. He had changed a lot, no wonder I didn't recognize him. After two months be become my boyfriend even though sometimes I been crazy he been there for me because he love me since day one. But according to Bertrand Russell, these are just random occurrences that would seem to be purposeful but are not. I just happen to be at the right place at the right time to make these occurrences feel comfortable.

Test 1 11632
I love basketball; I play every Wednesday and Sunday. On Sunday it’s my adult basketball league, whenever I play I get really competitive. I play aggressive, play smart, and especially play as a team player. I am the teams point guard so like Spock there is a lot of thinking and logic when it comes to playing, Should I pass the ball? Or what play should we run when we need a quick basket. Sometimes I take matters into my own hands and just take over the game becoming fearless. When it comes to Kirk they explain that he has emotions he is heart strings. I’m an emotional person especially when it comes to relationships, or just people I care about. In relationships I would be the one to say I love you first. When I love someone I love unconditionally. I tend to people my feels aside and care about others first, Friends, family, and even my pets. I have two cats that I spoil by getting them a lot of toys and comfortable cat couches. I enjoy making people happy. Growing up I wasn’t much of a leader, never gave directions or tried to take charge of a certain situation. Now that im older and I have a younger brother I try to lead him in the right direction. I want my little brother to enjoy life finish school, and have a good career. I make sure he stays positive and follows the right path. He looks up to me a lot so I need to set a good example. A couple of summers ago, I had a crush on this really cute girl. At the time I had a job but wasn’t making a lot of money. One day she called me and asks if we can go to the beach, of course I said yes before checking my bank account. I was too excited so without thinking I said yes lets go. I picked her up and noticed that I only had 40 dollars on me and no gas in the car, the gas light was on. I told myself I’ll put 10 bucks of gas and that should be fine. The beach from my house was 40 miles away I was totally pushing it. So I was stressing out about money but I really wanted to go on this date. So I pull up to the gas station tell the clerk 10 dollar on pump 1. So as I am putting gas I begin to get a little sad because I know that I need every dollar. As the gas is pumping I see that the gas keeps pumping even after 10 dollars of gas has been filled. The pump didn’t stop it kept going and going until finally my gas tank is filled. The clerk looks at me and waves me in to the office. He tells me that he made a mistake and instead of 10 dollars he put 100. He wanted me to pay but I explained to him that im not the one who make the mistake and I am not going to pay. I wasn’t rude to him just explained I didn’t have the money and that I shouldn’t pay. I walked out with a smile and said thanks God. I don’t really play the lotto or play the scratchers. One day I went to a footlocker I saw a basketball jersey that I wanted. I was 40 dollars short. I left and told myself I’ll come back when I have the money it wasn’t meant to be. I stopped at a CVS to buy a soda; I had 10 dollars in cash. I decided to buy one lotto scratcher I don’t really buy them so I figured why not. I won 60 dollars; I was really excited I cash the ticket, went straight to the mall and bought my jersey. In both situations I wouldn’t know how to explain, was it a miracle? Maybe. Some would say it was a miracle. In the gas pump situation im sure a skeptic would say that it was simply a mistake on the clerk no miracle there. The lotto ticket winnings some would say it’s just luck right place at the right time. I do believe in God and miracles things do happen for a reason, I just can’t explain why or how.

Clancy Raines Film Test 1 Code 11632 1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describes three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock”, “Kirk”, and “Scotty”.
Looking back at notable life experiences, I can think of a number of times when I've reacted based on "Heart Strings" or "Heartless" thinking, though "Heart Beat" doesn't come to mind as easily. To tie two examples together, I had fallen for a girl back in high school, and she was smitten with me. Everything I'd ever heard about high school relationships was negative, that they were short-lived at best, so I kept my emotions in check for my own good in the long run. I'd imagine she thought of me as heartless at that point. Of course, something else happened over the course of high school which sent me into a fit of depression, and my heartstrings rationale led me back to her, and we got together for the remainder of high school. As for the reptilian survival instinct, I was never really prepared for driving, but I needed to get a license. Millions of people drive around every day with accident rates being microscopic in the bigger picture, but even as I told myself this, I found my foot jerking away from the gas pedal as soon as I first pressed down on it. I tend to have poor spatial awareness, which is critical in driving safely, so this was a case of my brain stem overriding my own intentions for my own good.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describes two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? There was a strange coincidence in my life just a few months ago, during the fall session. After hearing about one of my classes getting cancelled, I got to go home early, taking the bus and walking. As I was walking down the block towards my house, one of my parents' old coworkers was driving up to the house, to drop some things off. Neither of us had a particular time that we expected to arrive, and yet we both made it there at the same time, traveling by different means. The rational explanation is that it's merely coincidence, and if we examined the time it took for both of us to get to my house and the times we left at, the numbers would line up. Another coincidence was when I was approaching a classroom in high school, after classes were over, to ask one of my teachers a question. As I approached the door, I could hear them quite clearly talking about me in a very negative light, having to do with my dislike of my rowdy classmates, which I distinctly remember being nicer to, that day. At that point, I forgot what I was going to ask and left. The coincidence can be explained by the teacher's rationale, considering that I hadn't gone to that classroom to ask questions after class before. It led me to harbor resentment for one particular teacher, though that teacher likely didn't mean what they said in the way I had thought. No rhyme or reason, just unlucky timing from both parties.

Enrique Poveda Film Test 1
1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as "Spock", "Kirk", and "Scotty."
As a photographer I feel like my Spock and Scotty side work hand in hand when I must deny low-ball job offers. I have to think logically in breaking down the time and work that I must put into a job, that way I am paid accordingly and not working for free. Many think it's as easy as focusing the camera, snapping a couple of pics and uploading them to the computer. Little do they know there is much prep and post work that comes along with a photo shoot. It's not that I'm not willing to work with a clients budget either, some jobs just aren't worth what they can afford. Which is where the part of me that has to deny the client comes in that is Scotty. However, there have been a number of times where Kirk steps in that tells me to do it for charity. Although photography is a business for me, it is my passion. I enjoy capturing moments of people's lives that allow them to share and look back at the good times they've had. A friend of mine volunteers to work events for his church and asked if I would be willing to do portraits for the less fortunate families who could not afford to have any taken for the holidays. I agreed. It was a great opportunity for me to give back and practice my passion. It makes me feel good to have met some very nice people and provide a service that is a luxury for many.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally?
I believe I have some sort of good luck when it comes to "beating the rush". There are many times where I look around and think, "damn, had I been here a minute later I would've had to wait in that long line!" One example is every time I go to a restaurant, initially it is empty and my party is seated instantaneously and within a matter of minutes there is a line out the door. Another example is with traffic. I'll jump on the freeway and the traffic will be going the opposite way (and I never check traffic reports before driving anywhere). Of coarse this doesn't happen EVERY time, but it happens often enough for me to think I just have good luck with timing. However a skeptic might say that it's just coincidence and has everything to do with the time frames that I choose to do these things, no sort of luck there. I happen to go to lunch at 11:30 instead of 12 when the lunch hour rush really hits, or I happened to be heading west when the east bound 9-5 workers are going home from Los Angeles. Whatever the case may be, I still like to believe I'm just lucky to never have to waist my time waiting.

Jessica Martinez Professor David Lane Philosophy 8 Code #11632 1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describes three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock”, “Kirk”, and “Scotty”. The way in which I have acted like “Spock” was when I was debating whether I should drop my English class or if I should continue even though I had a D in the class. I had spoken to my professor and he was practically telling me that I should drop it or to try really hard in my research paper. During that 15 minute talk it kept going through my mind and I felt like dropping it because his facial expression was practically telling me that he had no confidence that I could do it. Then out of nowhere the words “I’ll try really hard on the research paper” slipped out and he seemed really surprised. I acted logically in the sense that I had worked hard enough and knew that if I tried even harder I could pass the class and in the end I was able to. The way in which I act like “Kirk” is when I take my niece and nephew out and hang out with them. Even I only have certain amount of money left for the week I use pretty much all of it on them because they are a big part of my life. Whenever I use it all I never regret it because I enjoy seeing them happy and I know that they are deserving of it all. The way I have acted like “Scotty” is when I was serious health issues instead of acting dramatic or thinking the worst, I quickly called my mom and she took me to the hospital and my issue was resolved quicker than if I had taken it in a different manner. 2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describes two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? An unusual coincidence that I have experienced in my life is when I had my friend for one of my classes in college. The reason that it is unusual is because she was my best friend in elementary and we had not seen each other until that moment. I was the one that moved from school and really missed her when I arrived to my new one. Then the first day in college had begun and as I entered the classroom I noticed that she was in there. We were both shocked to see each other but still felt as if we were the friends we were in elementary. When we started talking to each other that first day it turned out that she was in the same program as I was. We both were surprised how it happened and the fact that we have stayed best friends since that first day that we saw each other in college. One of the ways that it happened in this way is that we lived in the cities that were right next to each other and with Mt. Sac being one of the closest to us it would kind of make sense that we would go for that particular college. In the case of being in the same program, the same person recommended the program to us so it was kind of expected for both of us to go for that program.

1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as "Spock", "Kirk", and "Scotty." Feel free to tell it in story form.
It was the summer of my junior year in high school and I had a big decision to make. In this specific situation I resembled Spock in the way that I was thinking solely logical in deciding to move to California. I was thinking about my future, and which college I could possibly attend if I moved here. In this situation I acted emotionally as well, I thought of my family and friends I’d be leaving behind. I acted logically and emotionally while dealing with this specific situation. A situation in which I acted in a way resembling Kirk was when I got into a fight with my best friend. I was not thinking about our situation logically but was fueled by anger and frustration. A time I acted like Scotty was when I refused to go bungee jumping because of my body’s natural avoidance of cliffs. I have gone cliff jumping but it was extremely hard to jump of the cliff just for the fear that I naturally have of jumping to my death.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally?
I experienced a coincidence when I was buying a water from the vending machine. It just so happen that I was a quarter short but coincidentally there was an extra quarter in the machine. Another coincidence I have encountered was when I called a good friend of mine and she said that she was just about to call me. Both of these instances were unusual to me and seemed like such a coincidence. It seems so bizarre that these things just spontaneously occur. A skeptic however would rationally explain that there are just a series of events that aligned and caused this seemingly unusual coincidence. People often times think it must have been some type of miracle, but if you think about all of the events that have taken place that specific day it is possible to see that what you experienced was merely the luck of the draw.

1. I acted as Spak once in my life when I would do my math homework everytime. It was just correct data to me when I thought of everything in my math class from a numerical standpoint. I act as Kirk constantly by following my emotions even though they can tend to get me in trouble or don’t always work out in my favor. My emotions made me once forget about my relationships with several people in my life when I should’ve ignored them for a better purpose. I acted as Scotty once by wrestling in high school. Not only did we constantly drill and repeat wrestling technique, but we always had the same outlook and mentality on the sport and it’s life applications. 2. One time in my life where I went through a really strange coincidence was when I went on a church retreat and was having some problems at home. That weekend I prayed for everything to get better with my current situation, knowing that prayers won’t literally come to manifestation as we all wish them to be. That weekend when I returned home, my prayers had literally been answered. Another example is when I was wrestling. It was a team dual against another team and I had to pin my opponent to win the dual for us. He was much better than me and I knew my chances of winning were completely against me. I was getting destroyed by my opponent and with just 30 seconds left in the match, my opponent made a huge mistake. I capitalized on his mistake and pinned him. Bertrand Russell and skeptics will explain this incident by most likely explaining that my opponent wasn't consistent with the match and his technique and that's why I won. As for my prayers to be answered I think he would just say that it's a huge and rare coincidence that my prayers were answered.

Code:11632 1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock”, “Kirk”, and “Scotty”. Sometimes when a person is in a hurry or is simply too busy to even keep up with the things they need to do we forget things or make imprudent mistakes. The cerebral cortex is a part of the brain, whom is portrayed as “Spock”, that keeps people thinking logically and more reasonable. One point in my life where I reacted like Spock was one day when I had many things to do in the day and needed to be driving from city to city, that morning when I made my list of things to do I planned my day accordingly so that I will not need to drive back to a certain city which in the end saved me easily 3 hours of my day driving back and forth in LA traffic. The mid brain, which is being portrayed as captain Kirk, has ties with emotion. With this being said when the midbrain is being utilized to make a decision the emotion and feelings of the person making the choice plays a huge influential factor. One time when I reacted more like Kirk was when my younger sister, niece, and nephew all wanted to go out for ice-cream and to the park but I had a full schedule and had a lot of school work to catch up on, but because I let my feelings get to me I ended up taking them to get ice cream despite all the things I had to do. The reptilian brain stem, which is portrayed as Scotty, is part of the brain that is in charge of patterns. This part of the brain works every morning when someone wakes up to go to school or work, they get ready by doing the same ritualistic steps they did the day before.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? One incident where I experienced an unusual coincidence was shortly after I replaced a part of my suspension from my car and ended up in an accident that still raises questions in my head to this day. One day while driving on my way to school my suspension light turns off on my dashboard, but I think nothing of it since I had just gotten my car back from the shop with that same problem fixed. Three days after as I am driving on the freeway with my music blasting as loud as possible, going at a slow speed of 60 in the farthest left lane, the traffic is barely clearing up in front of me when all of a sudden I feel a huge tug on my steering wheel. As a result of the strong tug my car turned completely to the right resulting in me ending up at the far right lane of the freeway within what felt like 5 seconds. Within that time I was able to doge two cars near me but I did hit one car who spun on the freeway in the opposite direction I ended up spinning. Luckily we were both fine; his car had a very minor bump on his bumper, my car on the other hand ended up needing the same exact part that was previously “fixed” along with the auto body parts from the outside to be fixed. Whether or not it was a coincidence that my car lost control because of the part that was recently “fixed” I’m not sure. This may or not be a coincidence I may be the worlds worst driver to some of you or I just may be one of the worlds luckiest people to not have died when this accident took place.

Quiz #1 11632 1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock,” “Kirk,” and “Scotty.” Feel free to tell it in story form. After watching the Star Trek metaphor video I get what the video meant on how we have three different parts of our brains and how they can take control of us in different situations in our lives. I remember for one instance when my “Scotty” persona took over when I was still in elementary school and I was in a karate tournament doing a sparring match. Now sparring is when two karate students from different schools or the same school fight against one and other and try to reach a certain amount of points before the other fighter does and the way you accomplish this is by hitting the other fighter somewhere on the body or the head so when you or the other fighter reach the certain number of points that person wins and moves on to the next round. I was in this sparring tournament and there were a lot of fighters competing in my belt class so when the tournament started I just know that I fought about six fighters but the thing is I different remember anything about those fights I just remember that I got to the championship round and lost and that’s it I don’t remember anything else. Now “Spock” persona always takes over when I’m coaching basketball when I’m trying to figure out my starting lineup, plays, defenses or when I trying to figure out how to beat the opposing team for example when I coached a city league team and I was trying to figure out my lineup rotation because the league had a rule that every player had to play so I was trying to figure out and lineup rotation that was balanced so the good players were mixed in with the bad players so they could compensate for certain weakness they had and I ended up figuring it out. The “Kirk” persona takes over whenever I played basketball in high school because basketball is a game that you cannot think too much when you are playing so whenever I played basketball I tried not to think too much when I’m playing because I already know the plays we run because we practiced them every day so I try to relax and let the game come to me and just try to feel it.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using your own life as a template, describes two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? One unusual coincidence I remember having in my life was when I was in middle school and me and one of my friends were wearing the same outfit and I’m not just talking about wearing the same shoes, shorts or shirt I’m saying that me and him were wearing the same shirt, the same shorts and the same shoes and I was thinking how in the world that me and him would be wear the same exact everything on the same day what are the chances. Another unusual coincidence I experienced in my life was when I was at Venice Beach with some friends and we were looking at some of stores and enjoying the beach and we started talking about one of our friends that we went to school with and we were remember a certain moment we had with him I don’t recall that certain event we were talking about now but nonetheless we were talking about him and this certain moment while we were headed over to a restaurant to get something to eat and guess who we see there the friend we were talking about and I couldn’t believe it what are the chances that he would be there at Venice Beach on that day, in that restaurant, and that certain person we would be talking about would be there at that time. If I asked Russell what are the chances of that happening he would probably say there are many variables that would lead to this conclusion wear same exact outfit would occur because we both have same taste and clothes and depending on the rate we see each other and the weather we were bound to where the same outfit the same goes for the second incident it was bound to happen it was summer most people go to the beach during the summer and we were going to the restaurant around one to eat lunch and most people eat lunch around one so it would be a great possibilities that I would see my friend their along with bunch of other variables.

1. Drawing from the Star Trek Metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe 3 or more incidents from your life where you reacted as Spock, Kirk, and Scotty. Feel free to tell it in story form.
This video explained the idea that our brains have multiple personalities of some sort, and each of these are represented by the three main characters of Star Trek. Our brain thinks rationally, emotionally, and physically. Rationally is not a way I often think outside of school and work but one example or story where I reacted with a “Spock” mind complex was when I did not receive a dorm at California State University Monterey Bay. Basically from the time I was in fourth grade, when I entered the gate program I worked very hard to get good grades in order to get into a four-year university. I was accepted into CSU Monterey Bay and a day before I was supposed to leave to school I received a call. The woman on the receiver notified me that all the dorms were full and I did not receive a residence hall. I was furious, sad, and a multitude of other emotions. I wanted to give up but I couldn’t think with my hearty. I had to think with my brain. So I signed up for Mt. Sac this past fall 3 days before the quarter began began and got myself a last minute back p plan. I tend not to think as Kirk as ofter, with my hear, but one situation a friend of mine was going through reminds me of Kirk. My ex best friend Same was in an abusive relationship for two and a half years. She ruined our friendship and many others, because when we warned her of obvious signs she was blinded by her love for him and although he’d lie and cheated she stayed with him. She said we were trying to ruin her love, cause we were jealous. She finally came to her senses and just a month ago she broke up with him and tried rekindling our friendship. I see Scotty as more of a survival of the fittest type of metaphor. A time where I experienced a Spock would have to be when I got into a car accident with my grandma when I was six. She went to pick me p from day car one ida in June. A car ran a red light smashing into our tail as we were yielding for a left turn we spun out and my grandma reached back to hold me so I wouldn’t tumble around the back seat. She was my Spock, and her arm was broken, she hasn’t driven since. This was a Spock move in a sense considering the fact that she only cared about what was going to happen right there and then. She didn’t plan it out ahead of time and how she was rationally going to ave me. She reacted off of pure instinct and that possibly saved my life.

Both of the two situations I will describe in this passage come from religious experiences. Because of these two events and others it is difficult for me to be skeptic towards my christianity beliefs and ideology at which I was raised by coincidences are very hard to come by, and I question if religious coincidences are even possible because everything that happens in relation to God would be caused by God right> So that would make coincidences impossible in a religious setting, correct? But either way I will continue with my examples. First of a, I remember experiencing multiple occasions were I’d think of a controversial religious issue and think about it for hours looking to my family and other of my religious mentors for answers but although they’d tell me as much as they knew it wasn’t quite satisfying sunday after one particular Saturday where I was questioning many ideas the sermon was focused on exactly what was on my mind . was shocked that all my questions from the entire day before were answered in a matter of 30 minutes. If I were skeptical I think i’d say that the topic is probably that which many were thinking. A generic question is the perfect basis for a touching sermon.

1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as "Spock", "Kirk", and "Scotty." Through out my life I have dealt with many decisions and how I choose to see them as an handle them. Starting off I am more of a logical person when it comes to dealing with situations(Spock). A very important moment happened in my life before this spring semester at Mt. Sac. The beginning of January I had started working at Tesoro refinery as an Electrician trainee. I dropped out of Mt. Sac my fall semester because I was started at twenty two dollars an hour. The end of my first week there I had decided that I really wanted to go back to school. I thought logically if I wanted to bust my back my whole life there as a worker or go to school and get a job that was more suitable for me. I thought like Spock and made a decision to go back to school because that was the best thing for me based on the fact that I got real life experience of a physical labor work job and I knew school was the best option for me. I knew if I would have stayed there I would make a lot of money but I knew from the way I was brought up, I needed to go back to school. There are many ways i think emotionally like Kirk, but one of the main ways I do is when it comes to my girlfriend and friends. I remember when I first got with my girlfriend three years ago I would always ditch my friends to hangout with her. I was so "obsessed" you can say we would hangout almost everyday, even when we didn't have money we would just walk around the mall. It didn't matter what we had back then or if we had homework or if we were supposed to hangout with our friends or family, I always chose to hangout with her(Kirk). I felt at the time that it was right. A time where I've felt like Scotty in order to survive was when I got food poisoning for about three days. I wasn't able to eat anything but small plain things. I was in so much pain I was in bed the whole time. During that time i thought to myself the only thing I can do is rest. I cleared my head and tried to stay pre occupied with other things other than pain. Sure enough soon I was better then ever.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally? One unusual coincidence I am very appreciative of is my first job. I had been looking for a job for over a year and when I was driving home from school i saw a hiring sign because they were building the store. I walked in applied and left. There was no one in there just construction workers and a box of applications and you would leave it there. I remember when i got a phone call for an interview and then i got the job I couldn't believe after a year of online applications and in store walk ins, the one I finally applied to that wasn't even opened gave me my first opportunity within a week. I couldn't believe while I Would apply at 5 or more jobs a day I applied at one at got it. Another moment that happens a lot is me getting the last pair of shoes that are my size. I collect sneakers and It seems like every time I go to buy a pair of shoes i get the last size 9. About a month ago I went to the store knowing the pair of shoes I wanted come out so often but sell out quick. I got there and saw a pair on display of Comme De Garcons on the shelf, I then asked the man if I could see a size 8. He then proceeded to the back and came back with the box with only one shoe and the other on the display and told me that I got the last pair. I was so happy because Ive gotten so lucky with collecting various sneakers. I think Bertrand Russell would say that these things happen by chance. That theres no controllable person sequencing these events out for me. That I just so happened to be at the store at the right place and the right time.

I acted as Spock when my dad came home one day and asked if he knew who damaged his truck, it looked like it made contact with another car. We thought it was my little brother, who has no permit or license, that took it out for a spin but things just didn't add up for him to be responsible. The keys to the truck were locked in my parents bedroom the whole day. I was also there the whole day and my brother wasn't. My brother doesn't know how to get that truck started. In the end we figured it must have been one of the people that park around our house to pick up their kids from the school on the other side of the block, it gets really busy around our area because of that.
I reacted as Kirk when i heard a good friend of mine had broken up with her boyfriend. It had been a long relationship and I was someone who could relate with her so she talked to me about it. It wasn't easy helping her get through the break up because I was at the same time reminded of my own failed romantic venture. However, I didn't have someone to talk to about my own relationship and knew it would've helped, so I continued to talk to her and give her my ears.
I acted as Scotty when I was a wrestler in high school. I was in a tournament and was tired and banged up from the matches I had been in but I knew I couldn't relax until it was over and I was sitting in our bus headed home, my team was counting on me getting those match points.

I actually don't really pay attention to coincidences so I can't point out certain occasions that come to mind. Coincidences are meaningless to me, if they work in my favor then awesome, and if they work against me then oh well, I shall carry on with my life just the same regardless.
