1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock”, “Kirk”, and “Scotty”.
One incident where I have reacted as Spock may have been the time I though going down a particular street will take me home faster. It turns out that street was a much faster route not because it was a “miracle” but because logically thinking there was hardly any traffic lights so obviously I didn’t get stopped at red lights as much. An incident where I have reacted as Kirk may have been the time when I was younger we were playing a pickup game of football and absolutely nothing was working and we obviously didn’t want to lose. I suggested we send the little guy, who hasn’t made any big plays thus far to go down the seam and hopefully he’s open. It worked. It didn’t work because he was the best player out on the field that day but because we used creativity to send someone down the field who hasn’t drawn a lot of coverage all game. Now an incident where I have reacted like Scotty may have been when I was accepted into California State University Fullerton. I thought it was such a miracle that I was accepted. I felt as if I was in a movie where some young boy rises from poverty and becomes successful and can start to plan my happily ever after. But, again it was all just emotion that was making me feel as if it were a miracle. I must have forgot all the work throughout high school that I put in to put me in a position to be accepted into a university, or at least a California State University.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally?
Drawing from the film Surfing Matrix two incidents in my life where I have experienced an unusual coincidence would be when I was out shopping around looking for a new tablet or laptop to buy. I kept seeing nice tablets and laptops that really drew my attention. However I couldn’t find ‘the one’. The one that I was going to be truly satisfied with. I was at best buy and saw a really nice tablet I believe it was the Galaxy tab? I don’t remember as I don’t have that tablet anymore but anyway I saw the tablet and thought I should just buy it now before someone else comes and takes it. I decided to wait because the price on it was a bit more than what I wanted to spend. Later that day I’m on my way to school and decide to stop by a target to get some supplies I needed. I pass by the electronic aisle and what do I see the same tablet on sale! I wasted no time and bought it. I felt it was so odd that I wanted this tablet earlier but couldn’t get it and now all of a sudden it sitting right in front of me for about $75 less than what I wanted to spend. Bertrand and Russell would probably say it’s not a coincidence considering the tablet was already on sale all I did was walk in to the store and see it.

Test #2
Part 1: -A couple of years ago, I was trying to get a stain in my car’s carpet and I could not find
what chemical to use and how to do it without spending too much cash.
So, I went to the 99 cents only store and found a solution spray bottle
that said that it would do the job. I bought it, but I was very
skeptical about using that product. I was afraid to ruin my the carpet,
there are solutions that end up ruining the carpet. First I used the
solution on a piece of carpet at a hidden part of my car. End up not
staining it, so I continued clean the rest of the carpet. I had to first
make a guess, experiment, then pull out a conclusion.
-I
am a car technician, so I use the scientific method most of the times I
need to find out what is wrong with the car before I even start working
on it. The car comes in, the client tells me what happened with the
car, I listen, visually check, try different things to see how the
functionality of the car would be, then I draw a conclusion. I use the scientific method most of the time in these kinds of situations.
-I
once was going to jump into a river pool, but I figured that I was
going to get hurt if I did not check if the depth of the water was
appropriate and that there were no rocks or any other object under the
water surface. I climbed under the cliff into the river’s pool then got
in to inspection the pool very well before jumping. I figured it was
safe to jump, and I was glad that I did that and not just jump and risk
dangerous injury. I first observed, thought of a possible result, check
if I was right or wrong, then I drew a conclusion from my experiment.
Part 2: A
long time ago, I watched a horror movie. Later at night when I was
alone in my bedroom, while everyone in my house was already sleeping, I
felt that some ghosts were around me trying to hurt me. When I realized
that it was to much torture for me, I said outloud to the “spirit” that
was around me, “just show up if you really exist”. As expected, nothing
happened after I said these words. Since then, I was able to sleep in
peacefully. The explanation to why it worked is that I since I was able
to said the words, I was able to think rationally and my mind was
basically building a wall between the crazy thoughts running in my mind
and reality.
Part 3: Calvino’s
shuffle Metaphor should be a guiding principle because there is no way
to be absolutely certain of something because nature is so complex and
human intelligence is so limited to many unknown things that there are
so many possibilities since we do not know when and how everything is
going to end, if there is an actual end. For instance, when a baby is
born, his parents cannot say what is going to happen with the baby’s
life, how he is going to be, or how his life is going to be. Until there
is an end of the baby’s life, then the parents, if they still exist,
can draw a conclusion about all this questions. Also, when someone takes
certain challenge in his/her life, the person should keep in mind that
failure, success, anything else, or simply nothing is possible to happen
at the end of the challenge.

Film Exam Questions/ 02
01. When I was in the high school, for the science fair I made a waterfall. I used clay to make the waterfall and the details. I pumped water to the top of the waterfall by using a motor, tube and a small can. When I start the motor and let the water flows into the can it pumped the water to the top of the waterfall and it flows to the very end. The process continuously pump the water up to the top and release to the bottom. By using a resistor, LED bulb, wire link, and two batteries I made a circuit that blinks continuously by connecting each other together. I burnt a dried leave using a magnifier and sunlight. By using Einstein’s theory “Every Action has a Reaction” I made a catapult. 02. I wanted a kite for my school holidays, but my father ignored to buy me one because he was scared of me going out from house. But I continuously thought about it, and someone’s kite floated up in the air to the top floor of my house. I have no idea how that happened. Still cannot figure it out. 03. When you are observing the entire scene of his shuffle and the way he positioning the cards, whoever watches it, they have to identically analyze the each and every moment of him while comparing the similarities and the story behind the cards. He explains the scientific relation behind the theory at some points. The cards are compelling a story of how the ancient people lived and involved in the way of living. By his shuffle he might explaining a prediction through the story. He also attempted to see the world through one eye, and those cards are probably an observation to the observer to generate an idea regarding his shuffle and the truth behind his work. The observer has to watch and study the scene carefully. The observer can maintain his/her mental ability by analyzing and thinking about the scene. Observer’s five senses are activated while observing this case. The phenomenon is a conspiracy to the observer, but it is a better exercise to increase the thinker’s mental capability. Even though it doesn’t make any sense, but the observer’s interpretation and the curiosity is a compelling exercise to his/her brain. The way he placing the cards, he already made up his own story by his mind. He wants the observer to clarify his mind of thinking and compare that with the observer’s idea. Observer can judge the scene in various ways and subjects, probably Economics, Physics, Mathematics, or Psychology.

1. When I was in Afghanistan in 2012, I believed that if you made people more comfortable with you then they would not only perform better but would also have fewer mistakes. I noticed other Marines would have continuous problems with teaching third world country men how to drive and refuel jets. So I took it upon myself to teach these third world country men to perform at their best potential. First, I introduced myself and then asked them more about their life, family back home and how they grew up and what was on their minds. Not only did I see a positive result from this experience but feedback not only from the third world county men but a supervisor from Rolls Royce came up to me and told me how well they have been doing recently and improvement. I believe I did my best to teach these men something they never experienced before and they thanked me for that. They would continuously ask for me when they needed help or just had a question. They would always try and talk to me because they knew I would listen. For this, my experience worked not only for me, but the Marine Corps as a whole and the men I taught. 2. I remember growing up and playing little league baseball we would always say a chant to the batter. It went along the lines of, “hey batter batter, swing” the majority of the time it worked, especially playing with younger kids; they’re more vulnerable. It worked by getting into the batters head and having them less focus on the pitcher. 3. You never know when you are certain. You can be certain as of now, but later in the future that can all change. An example would be, hundreds of years ago people thought the earth was flat. Of course you can see how that could be true hundreds of years ago because they would argue if the world was round, they would fall off earth. They did not know of gravity at the time. You obviously know now that the earth is round. Satellite images can prove that. So you never know you are certain just because at the time you could be right but in the future it could change.

Assignment code 999 In business I often have to estimate a competitive price for the insurance product I’m selling to my clients. I feel like I take a scientific approach to come up with this price by trial and error. I have several tools all of which are my best guesses, or hypothesis. I will use historical data, given data and estimated data to come up with a strong indication but until the sale is closed I won’t know if the numbers were good enough to earn the business. Due to the competition in the market place we need to have a really good product going in and we need to know more about the client than just the price. Every client we deal with is different to the people running the business but may be similar in nature of operations. My job every day is to look at data and figure out how to best apply it in the best way to each client and since each client is different I need to approach all data uniquely to that client. In the end my hypothesis or guess to what will sell the client is used by the salesman to make the best presentation possible to find a solution for the client’s needs. In regards to Voodoo Voodoo, magical formula we had not a chant but a common saying we used on our high school basketball team that we would yell at an offensive player on the other team while he was taking a shot. One of our younger players on the team would often yell “shooter!!” at the opposing player when he was taking a shot in order to distract them from making the shot. This caught on with many of us on the team and started using it in passing in the hall or to make fun of each other, but we did believe that it was going to affect the opposing player and make him miss the shot. Of course it didn’t always work but we would almost always yell this at the opposition when running at them as a unique distraction with the intent that it was going to cause them more often than not to miss. I still use it today when I’m playing basketball, but not always would I use “shooter” sometimes I will just scream a sound or yell loudly to make my presence known and try to distract the player. In regards to Calvino’s Shuffle we shouldn’t ever jump to conclusions for as Nicolas of Cusa would suggest we can never really know all of the information. Since we can’t know what the message is until the last card is played we need to be as informed and educated on the subject as much as possible before giving our best hypothesis of what should be considered our best answer for the situation but may not be the best answer for someone else. Example I’ll use which was extremely embarrassing for me was the time I went to visit a client in Los Angeles, a dry cleaning shop. I had been talking to the owner a week previously and she told me she had to hurry the conversation along because she needed to take her daughter to the doctors. When I arrived at the client’s location the next week, the daughter greeted me at the front desk. She appeared to be pregnant and because her mother had mentioned she needed to go to the doctor I assumed this to be the case. She did not look to be a person who was fat because her belly was the only thing that was large. So of course I congratulated her on being pregnant and she immediately looked puzzled and said “I’m not pregnant”. I was very embarrassed and knew right at that moment before I even spoke to the decision maker that I was probably not getting this deal. I assumed she was pregnant by walking in to the game without knowing all the information needed to make the decision and put my foot right in my mouth.

Use this thread to post your tests and your responses 1. Drawing from the movie "we are all scientists" describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your thoughts or actions were scientific. I have one recent incident where I believe I acted scientifically. My toilet tank had been leaking water. Not only is it annoying it can be costly too. I needed to repair it and I didn’t want to pay a plumber. I took of the top off the tank and observed how it operates. Once the water level goes down the balloon activates the tank to fill up with more water. I needed to keep the balloon at a level where it wouldn’t fill up unnecessarily. I thought if I increase the capacity in the tank it would need less water. I filled an old mason jar with water and placed it in the tank. The water level went up and it wasn’t running anymore. I was pretty proud of myself. Used my brain and saved myself some costly plumbing fees. 2. Using the movie "voodoo voodoo" as your prompt, have you in your life ever used a "magical formula" (from prayers to mantras to chants to childhood rhymes, etc.) to secure what you wanted or to protect yourself, etc? Feel free to tell your recollections in story form. How would you today rationally explain how and why it worked? During my senior year in high school I was low on units and there was a possibility I wouldn’t graduate. I was going to night school to catch up but I had that fear I wouldn’t walk in my cap and gown. I did what I hadn’t done in years. I asked God for a miracle. I prayed that he help me graduate. I promised if he granted my “miracle” I would have a better relationship with him. I would go to church every Sunday if only he would help me. Well God hear my prayers and I finally earned enough units to graduate. Looking back it was pretty selfish of me. So many other problems in the world and I wanted God to help me with something so petty. It may not have been God who helped me. It could have been hard work and determination that helped me achieve my goal. I would like to think it was a little of both. 3. Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples. Calvinos shuffle is important because it reminds us to wait until we have all information before making a decision. We often just jump to our own conclusions. Like in the card game we have to wait until the last card is drawn to find out what the whole story is.

999 1. An incident that happened in my life that I had to think scientifically was when I had to change breaks on a car for the first time. Yes it seems easy but it was my first time doing it all on my own. I first had to get a jack to lift the car up, and then I got a wrench to undo the bolts on the car rims. I proceeded to then take off the rim and the tire itself, I searched for the break pad and slid it out and greases up the new on and carefully slid it in. I popped the tire back in and screwed the bolts in and made sure they were snug then released the jack slowly so that the car went down slowly. I had to figure out how to do this on my own and it worked out pretty well. 2. When I was younger I and my friend would be together all the time and we would always want to stay longer with each other or spend the night at each other’s house. So she tells me one day if you get a dandelion and close your eyes and make a wish of what you want it would come true. I didn’t believe her at all. So to prove a point i said I would do it and we went searching for a dandelion, we found on and I did what she told me and I wished to sleep over her house that weekend. I blew the dandelion and when I went to my parents and asked they said yes! We would always do this all the time to get what we wanted together. To explain a rational way that this worked was we would do this in front of our parents when we are making the wish and they thought it was cute and they didn’t want us to believe that it didn’t work. So I think they just did it to make us happy because we were only in elementary school at the time. 3. Calvino’s shuffle is an important and it should be a guiding principle when it comes to claiming something for certain. This is so when as for an example you play the lottery, in Calvino’s shuffle there are steps first someone informs you that you’re going to win. The next step is you’re going to observe by buying the lottery tickets to see if it may or may not be true. Then depending on how many lottery tickets you buy will increase your chances in winning it. In his last step different cards can mean different things so when picking your numbers you won’t know till the day your numbers get called and to see if your lucky number will win you win then big money. Another example would be a car and to see what the problem is and how you can go through Calvino’s steps. You need to find out the basic information on the car and look for some information on the car that the problem would lie on. Then you check all the problems that might cause your car not to work, you cannot try something without it affecting the outcome or leading you to the main problem. Some of the problems you will run into will eventually solve your problem but you won’t know until you exhaust all your possible sources.

FILM EXAM QUESTIONS 2 #999 (1) Drawing from the movie "we are all scientists" describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your thoughts or actions were scientific.
I'm in charge of merchandising kids and baby clothing as well as men's clothing in the company I work for. I make sure I have a plan on where the new product is suppose to land or live in each shop or area of the store. What I do first is find out how much product I will be getting in a week before the day of shipment. It is a list of new product with the number of units I will be getting for each. We call this list the DER. Second, I take the DER and the Visual Book that the company sends us and start highlighting what we are getting from the DER into the Visual Book so I know where the new product is suppose to live in. Thirdly, after I highlighted all the new product from the DER into the Visual Book I then start drawing out blue prints, or what we normally call them as maps, to how I want the product to look like in each shop. Lastly, after all the maps have been drawn out,on the day of shipment, ( we call this Flow days), me and a team of specialized visual experts, called the Brand Team, start placing out all the new product based on the Visual Book and the maps and merchandise it to look "boutique" and presentable to the public.
I don't have any "magical formulas" that I say, however there is this "thing" I do when I want to beat the yellow light when it is transitioning to a red light. When I'm racing the yellow light I tap the roof of my car when I'm crossing it to prevent me from running a red light. After I successfully cross the yellow light, I do the sign of the Cross to thank the Lord by doing a little prayer for not running a red light.
Also, there are these 3 lengthy tunnels off of the 110 freeway that me and my girlfriend travel through going to and coming from work and each time we pass through them she yells, "hold your breath," and we would make a wish while holding our breaths.
3. Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples.
Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor and should be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain because for a few examples: (1) Before, people believed that the earth was flat. We then found this fact to be false due to vast scientific research clearly showing proof that the earth is not in fact flat, but instead a sphere. (2) Referring back to the earth being a sphere, people once believed that all the universe revolved around earth, that the earth was the middle of the entire universe. We found out later that the universe do not revolve around earth. Due to the discovery of other planets we find that the planets, including earth, revolving around the sun.

Exam # 2
1. Drawing from the movie “we are all scientist” describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your thoughts or actions were scientific. A couple years ago I was looking to purchase a new car, so during my search I used the scientific method to help make the best decision on which car was right for me and to see if it would fit my lifestyle. I went to multiple dealerships and test drove multiple cars, each dealership I went to I looked for the one that offered the best warranty and maintenance as this would determine which car I would be buying as I wanted to get the best bang for my buck.
2. Using the movie “voodoo voodoo” as your prompt, have you in your life ever used a “magical formula” (prayers to mantras to chants to childhood rhymes, etc.) to secure what you wanted or to protect yourself, etc? Feel free to tell your recollections in story form. How would you today rationally explain how and why it worked. One time I went to the movie theaters to watch a scary movie with my girlfriend who enjoys horror films however, I hate these types of movies because I always have nightmares about them and I personally feel they bring bad vibes. As a kid I remember being told if i’m scared to just pray and it would make everything better. A majority of the time that I prayed it would help me overcome my fears.
3. Calvinos shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples. Nobody ever knows that something is for certain. Somebody may think something is for certain at the time they thought of it however, what they thought was for certain could be wrong a few years later. An example would be the beliefs of intelligent design. People who believed and supported this system thought that this religion in disguise was the actual creator of humankind and earth. However they don't have concrete evidence to support their claim.

#999 - FILM EXAM QUESTIONS - #2
1. Drawing from the movie "we are all scientists" describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your thoughts or actions were scientific.
An incident in which I acted / thought scientifically actually occurs in my everyday routine. You see, I am a web developer and when it comes to making a clients website, not all clients know exactly what they want. To make a website, I already need to memorize / use functions and certain code sets. This is where my scientific state of mind comes to play. Most clients do not know exactly what they want their website to look like or what they want included. I need to put different variables together to create what they want, or an example for them.
When I was in my last year of middle school, I broke both of my hips playing football. The doctor said that I may not be able to walk or run right again. Back then, I considered myself a Christian. Being that my belief was in Jesus, I would pray in hopes that everything would work out ok and I would be able to walk / run correctly after all the healing. After all my surgeries, I put my all into physical therapy to up my chances of being healed fully. After about 6 months, I was able to run / walk fully and correctly. At the time, I just believed it was Jesus that did the healing for me. Now, I see that the physical therapy did the job for me.
3. Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples.
I believe it should be a guiding principle simply for the fact that you cannot truly claim something for certain unless you have analyzed it to its fullest depths. For instance, the other day I was at the store with my father. He sent me to an aisle to look for some bolis ( mexican ice cream ). I went to the ice cream aisle and I could not find them for the life of me. I must have walked up and down the aisle about 4 times before giving up and returning to tell my dad I could not find them. He did not believe me, so he asked a store clerk if they had any. Sure enough, they did. They were just located in another aisle and were not frozen.

1. Drawing from the movie "we are all scientists" describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your thoughts or actions were scientific.
A few years ago, I bought my first mac book. Before I bought the mac book; I had an HP pavilion laptop that was constantly overheating. In addition to the continuous overheating, the HP laptop was getting more prone to viruses. I figured, it was time for a new laptop. The employee at best buy was showing me different options for laptops and explaining the different specs each laptop has. The laptop I was attracted to was the mac book air. I decided to go with the mac book after analyzing and inspecting it. During this process of finding a new laptop, I used the scientific method to determine which laptop was best for me and will be beneficial for my life.
I played tennis for three years in high school. The mascot for my high school is a jaguar so my coach came up with a chant for the team that goes, “Jaguars jaguars, that’s our name, We play tennis just the same!” Although it sounds slightly cheesy; it helped us win. I believe this chant worked for my tennis team because it generated positive energy and spirit which helped us be focused and win the games.
3. Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples.
Calvino’s shuffle is important metaphor because it is not a good idea to claim something for certain and what is being claimed for certain can change over time. For example, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French naturalist, claimed that all organisms can acquire a specific trait during their life time and are transmitted to their off spring. This claim was in fact false because organisms cannot transmit their acquired characteristics to their offspring. That is saying if I got my thumb chopped off then my baby will be born without a thumb. This sounds completely crazy which is why Lamarck’s claims were falsified.

1. An incident in my life where I acted scientifically was during my first my year of college. I had to learn how to use my paychecks to pay for my bills. That same year I started school at the University of La Verne and being an expensive school, I had to take loans out by myself, borrow money from my parents and try to pay off my expenses. At the age of 18 I was already in debt and had to figure out how to stretch a dollar in order to survive my first year.
2. As a Catholic, after a person has passed everyone gathers together and prays the rosary. I have been included in several occasions. The belief behind it is that the prayer will help the deceased go straight to heaven. It isn’t something that I believe in but something that I had to partake in. I mean, how do I know for sure that a person’s soul is going straight to heaven if I do a prayer. I doubt my prayers act as a guide for the soul.
3. I do not agree that Calvino’s metaphor is appropriate. I believe everyone will interpret things completely different. For example, in relationships each party can take a detail and both can come up with different interpretations. So one can think that the other may or may not have feelings for the other and leaving it up to chance to figure it out and have “blind faith” in each other. You cannot figure things out without opening yourself up and being able to take a chance. Last, one can look at their past and see if it will affect them in the future.

Q(1) When I was in High School I dated boys, as one does- at times I would ask myself “Why am I dating this person?”. I would specifically test out the compatibility in a scientific way; with a question to see how like minded we were on controversial topics. Anyone who has an interest in politics knows a controversial topic can definitely draw blood between two people if they disagree. When testing out this compatibility question on the first guy I quickly found out we bumped heads. My question was simple, How do you feel about Gay people? You see I asked this question specifically because my brother is gay and if I were to get more serious with this guy I would eventually want to bring him around my family. His response to the question was very defensive, he quickly stated it was wrong and he would never support it. This conversation wasn't long because both of us were heated. You may figure this relationship ended quickly after. My scientific experiment worked in my favor by letting me escape a big judgmental waste of time. Science won again.
Q(2) Just as in VoodooVoodoo I did some similar type of ritual, although my way may be a little different it's still superstitious in the way i believe it works. I do a thing called “Power Pose”, and by statistics it was proven to ultimately improve the chances of success in the situation it's used in. Let me explain what power posing is, you stand in a Superior pose for 30 seconds or so and confidently repeat optimistic sayings. For my Senior Project I power posed religiously and I thought it worked in my benefit because before both of my speeches I power posed rigorously and after I was notified I looked comfortable and confident the whole time, enough to give me perfect scores on both times. I practiced power posing before both of my only two interviews in life, needless to say it worked and I was hired both times. The most effective time it was used so much to my advantage was before my behind the wheel DMV test. Minutes before I went in the car I went to the restroom to power pose multiple times, probably too many times. By the end of my test i was told i passed, I say it worked most this time because that day I went over a curb and don't think my signaling was the best. I would say the power pose worked for me because I sincerely believed it worked. I now only use it in times I desperately need it. Overall it made me feel more confident even if I didn't think I was qualified enough for the situation I used it in.
Q(3) Calvino believes nothing is ever certain even when certain. I can relate to this because in High School I belonged to a student cabinet, I was more than involved and thought by the time I was a senior I would for sure have the spot as President. This didn't happen. As bummed as i was it made me reflect on this concept, nothing is ever certain, even when certain. Although I thought I was destined to be president the other students did not believe so. This should be a guiding principal when claiming something is certain because it may show some people the world doesn't always go the way you want it to. A harsh reality but the bitter truth is better than a sweet lie.
