“Gumbyland”
1. A few years ago, my grandmother was having a New Years’ Eve party at her house in East Los Angeles. As the adults were doing their thing (drinking, dancing, and all that good stuff), we, the children, were playing outside like we usually did. One of my oldest brothers randomly came up to my cousins, younger brother, and I and said, “This is not Keith. This is an alien from outer space.” At some point, I did believe that it was an extraterrestrial who had possessed over my brother, but then I began to think that this could have been nothing but a lie. Even at this age (I believe I was 8 or 9) I was a skeptic and began to ask him all these questions, and asked him for proof. It led to the conclusion that I was not able to prove him wrong nor could he prove himself right. This conundrum led my cousins and me to just let him be. We could not prove that it actually was an alien who had taken over his body, so we kept on going along. My brother kept a well hidden face throughout the night and for a moment, started to freak us all out. He would roll his eyes back and say that “Keith needs your help.” He was really playing the part, and at this moment I thought he deserved to win an Oscar because his acting skills were impeccable. As the night headed toward an end, we all went inside to get some candy from my grandmother. A few of us noticed that my brother looked up at the sky and led out a gasp of relief, as if something had lifted from his very soul. He ran inside as his normal self, and acted as if he could not remember parts of the night. Until this very day, I cannot find myself to think whether this was all an act or if there was an alien who possessed over his mind. I guess the question will remain a mystery.
“Maya”
2. Dating about two years ago, there was this one attractive guy who I had had a crush on for several weeks. One day, we randomly started talking (texting and Snapchat) and we became close friends. As some months went by, I began to feel for him and he would give me the signals that he felt the same. We flirted, commented each other, went out a lot, and had really deep conversations. At the moment that I let him know how I felt, he completely blew me off and made me feel like a complete waste of time. This, I feel was the “Maya” in my life. I was deceived into thinking something only for their own ego, but I broke into realization as soon as he told me his thoughts. I did not break down and get all depressed, on the contrary, I laughed and felt so relieved, and left. That was the only way I knew how to deal with the situation, and it really helped me get over it.
Not only have I experienced “Maya,” but my oldest brother, Kevin, experienced it not too long ago. My brother was supposed to be married as of December 2014, but unfortunately, it was called off. According to my brother, he felt like he was going to marry the wrong person. He said he was deceived into marrying the wrong person because he had seen the true nature behind his ex-fiancé. She had masked herself with a glow and had everyone believe she was someone she really was not. He dealt with his problem by extricating himself from her and her family, and had us support him in this decision. He is doing much better now and is currently in such bliss.
“Feynman’s Imperative”
3. A plethora of things in this universe are possible, but they may also be impossible. For instance, there are thousands of theorists that believe the lochness monster resides in Scottish waters this present day. Many people have claimed to have personally seen “Nessie,” however have failed to show documented proof. By “proof” I do not mean blurry, bad quality videos where there is only an outline of the so called lochness monster, but something with high quality and biological facts. I am not necessarily saying I do not believe it is real, but very poor evidence has been given for someone to simply say they are a firm believer. Feynman’s Imperative is a crucial part in allowing us to think because it helps us question information that others may want us to intake. We are able to think for ourselves and believe what we want to without the manipulation or persuasion of others. We become individual thinkers and critically aim to find the reality behind the situation rather than substituting it with a paradox.
Ivash’s Caution allows us to be open minded of the many possibilities out in this universe. He believed that imagination was the best tool in a scientists’ arsenal; by not burying oneself deeply in one single thought, there will bring success. Being open minded to the many mysteries revolving us, can bring knowledge and understanding of the world and universe that surrounds us. In the beginning of it all, imagination is what helped us as humans strive for success and made the impossible into the possible. Carl Sagan once said, “Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.”
