1. Drawing from the Star Trek metaphor, and using your own life as a template, describe three or more incidents from your life where you reacted as “Spock,” “Kirk,” and “Scotty.” Feel free to tell it in story form.
As Star Trek metaphor there been moments in my life in which I have acted as all three of these characters. For example an incident had occurred where my best friend became extremely intoxicated and could not drive home from the bar one night. At the time we were not speaking to each other due to a misunderstanding. On a Saturday night around three a.m. my phone rang about three times, three missed calls from “Nicole”. When I finally answered, all I could hear was mumbling, crying, and yelling. ”Nicole” was drunk and needed someone to pick her up as soon as possible. As “Spock” would act logically so many things came to my mind. Rapidly I Jumped out of bed shocked trying to get as much information out of all the nonsenses “Nicole” was saying. As “kirk” my emotions started to get the best out me I was so angry. How could she act so irresponsibly! I demanded that she lock herself in her car and stay put. But I was mostly concerned and worried. I had no idea where she was, who she was with, or how much alcohol she had consumed that night. As my nerves kicked in I jumped into my car speeding down the I-10 west freeway heading towards down town Pomona. I figured it was my best bet finding her there. As I speeded irresponsibly worried about getting to “Nicole” as soon as possible, ”Scotty” kicked in. Thinking to myself, yes of course I wanted to make sure my best friend was safe but as I was driving I realized I also needed to make sure I arrived safely and kept myself together without being implosive. When I arrived to Pomona as I hoped and expected I found my best friend sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot next to our former favorite bar. Being relieved that I had found her, I drove her home that night safe and sound. We picked up her vehicle later that morning and there were no hard feeling.
2. Drawing from the film, Surfing Matrix, and using our own life as a template, describe two or more incidents from your own life where you experienced an unusual coincidence. How would Bertrand Russell or a skeptic explain it rationally?
One Thursday afternoon about two months ago the most recent and negative coincidence occurred. Now this coincidence happened to be my father “losing” two thousand dollars from his own home. The coincidence wasn’t so much my father “losing” the money, but “losing” the money the first and only day I had ever stayed at his house. This looked bad on me at first because I was the only one there. On the Thursday afternoon that I decided to stay at his had withdrawn money that he had left somewhere in his house. To be honest I was unaware of this but being aware wouldn’t have changed anything. Never in my life have I been a thief never less accused of being one. Turns out “coincidences” happen for a reason but I won’t get into too much detail. The money was later found thankfully clearing my name. Was it just a “coincidence” that the money turned out to be “missing” the one day I stayed at my father’s house or just pure evil sabotage? Somethings just happen. Another most recent coincidence, an actual positive one is having a really close friend of mine in the same philosophy class this semester. Now that’s a funny coincidence because taking this class was unexpected. I registered late this semester and I was on the wait list for this class. Out of all the classes I’ve taken, I have never had the same class with anyone I knew, never less a close friend.
