1. Drawing from the movie "We are all scientists" describe several incidents in your own life where you thought and acted scientifically. Be sure to detail how your own thoughts or actions were scientific.
- When I was younger me and my cousin would roller blade around my house. One day we wanted to try some tricks so we started jumping off the porch to see if we can land it. I went first and landed right. But when my cousin went, she landed wrong and fell right onto her arm. The next thing we see is her bone out of place. I screamed for help. Once we were inside the house I tried helping by wrapping a shirt around her arm to act as a sling. I would say that I acted scientifically in this incident because I tried to put myself in the doctor's place and think of what they would do.
Another area in my life where I believe I behave scientifically is choosing to be vegetarian. There are so many benefits that come along with this lifestyle. I am healthier now that I'm not eating all the processed, hormone injected meat. I feel better physically and emotionally. I'm helping the earth by saving animals and all of the water it takes to feed the animals that they kill. And I save way more money.
2. Using the movie "voodoo voodoo" as your prompt, have you in your life ever used a "magical formula" (prayers, mantra, chants, childhood rhymes) to secure what you wanted or to protect yourself? Feel free to tell your recollections in story form. How would you today rationally explain how and why it worked?
- When my siblings and I were younger we played in the street a lot. Whenever we were on the sidewalks or saw a crack in the ground, we would say this rhyme, "Step on a crack and you'll break your mama's back". After saying that we would jump over the crack and we'd run in the house to see if my mom was still in tact. We would say this to secure our mother not getting hurt and being there still to take care of us. Obviously now that we're older we know there is no true meaning to this rhyme. So the only way to say it worked is that my mother never did anything that could have resulted in her breaking her back, which is why it never happened.
3. Calvino's shuffle is an important metaphor. Why should it be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain? Give examples.
- Calvino's shuffle should be a guiding principle when claiming something for certain because everyone experiences situations from different perspectives and observe differently. This is why nothing could be for certain because what is true for one person, could not be true to the other. Examples are with colors. You can look at the ocean or sky and see blue, but another person could see green. This is because we all experience the color spectrum differently and therefore an objects color cannot be certainly blue.
