During the hurricane seasons in Honduras there are heavy storms during the day, and they show up in a one of a sudden manner. They are even scary because during the day when it is all calmed and quiet, it simply starts pouring like a war of gods in the skies. Well, when I was little, my grandfather used to tell me that all of that was happening because god was angry at my behaviors and that I needed to obey more and be a better kid. After every thunderstorm when even the house would shake, he would say that god was warning us to be ready his punishments if we were not in good stand with him. I was scared to death because I believed his words. I was not until I was taking a meteorology course that I realize that every single thunderstorm that exist has nothing to do with god, it is all physical reactions that occur in the process of the water cycle.
My cousin always shares that when she was a teenager, she would be a Power Ranger fan and her 6 year old younger brother was as well. She says that one day she told her younger brother to get out of her bedroom and watch her magic trick into her bedroom through the opening under the door. She told him that she was going to teletransport like the Power Rangers thourgh her wrist watch. So, while her younger brother was watching her feet, because that was the only thing he could see through the door opening, she jumped up to her bed, so his brother could not see her feet .She stayed quiet for a couple of minutes and then she jumped back to the floor so her brother could see her feet. then, she opened the door and her brother thought that she was a Power Ranger. He believed that she could teletransport herself just like the Power Rangers. I wonder how many people around the world has been tricked like that and had never been able to disbelieve such tricks.
Maya
I was a great fanatic of a popular soccer team in Honduras named Olimpia. I was so into this team that the day of the final of the championship, in 1999, I made a bet with a fan of the opposite team. We bet to let the other one to cut the looser’s hair bald. I lost the bet and went through the humiliation. I did the same for the next couple of years until I realized that I was just being deceived by Maya. I was being faithful to a delusion in my head that my team was the best, no matter what. However, I was able to realize that if I continued like that I was going to be exposed to be humiliated for the sake of nonsense. To be able to get rid of that delusion I started to say to myself that that team only has given me defeats than victories. When I made that comparison, I realized that no team deserved to be followed in such fashion.
The Honduran political system is based on tradition. The children follow the political party that the father and the grandfather followed. I was raised to think in this way. However, since I moved to the U.S., I was able to see this traditions in a different manner. During the presidential elections day in Honduras, every member of the family goes to the Honduran Embassy to vote for the National Party, the traditional party of the family. I told my mom to vote for the candidate that better suited the current situation of the country and not just a candidate that belongs to her favorite party. She one day told me that the president she voted for was a corrupt person and that she regreted her decision of voting for that person. I told her that the next time we could research together and try to find the person that would seem better for the situation of the country. Political parties are very uncertain, but with a educated and more rational decision, we could get close to finding the less worse leader of a nation.
